Red palm oil keeps the doctor away

We like to think that all fats are bad.

But Carotino Sdn Bhd executive director U.R. Unnithan will tell you that a tablespoon of red palm oil a day helps keep the doctor away.

Highlighting several scientific studies which shows that red palm oil is packed with nutrients, he said that in the past 30 years, doctors had painstakingly studied red palm oil's effect on cardiovascular health.

The results surprised researchers. Although high in saturated fat, red palm oil actually protects one against heart attack and stroke. In these studies, doctors found that adding red palm oil into a person's diet can remove plaque build-up in arteries and, therefore, reverse the process of atherosclerosis.

"Red palm oil basically helps the consumer maintain proper blood pressure and improve on his cholesterol ratio. The high antioxidant content in red palm oil quenches free radicals and keeps inflammation under control," said Unnithan.

He said essentially, red palm oil contained more nutrients than any other dietary oil. Apart from beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and lycopene, it contains at least the full spectrum of Vitamin E, Vitamin K, co-enzyme Q10, squalene, phytosterols, flavonoids, phenolic acids and glycolipids.

Red palm oil can also withstand extreme deep fry heat better than other vegetable oils like olive, soy, corn, canola and sunflower. When heated, red palm margarine and oil do not lose its valuable phytonutrients. "This is one of the reasons Kings Confectionery and Mamee snacks use our red palm margarine and oil."

Red palm oil is considered healthier than ordinary cooking oil because it is packed with carotenes such as beta-carotene and lycopene -- the same nutrients that give tomatoes, carrots and papaya their reddish-orange colour.

It is also the richest natural source of the potent form of Vitamin E called tocotrienols. "Olive oil does not contain any carotenes or tocotrienols, yet it is cleverly marketed as being healthy for the heart. It is time for Malaysia to step up marketing of red palm oil."

Having just returned from a business trip to Tokyo, Unnithan said many health-conscious young adults in Japan chose to have more salad and fruits in their meals. Malaysia benefits from this trend because Carotino red palm oil is increasingly being offered as part of the range of salad dressing that is healthy and tasty.

"We hope this healthy trend in Japan influences restaurateurs in Malaysia to offer Carotino salad dressing, along with olive oil, sour cream and thousand island. You get your daily dose of essential nutrients from just one tablespoon of red palm oil."

Medical studies carried out by international scientists ..
Dr. David Kritchevsky of the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, US demonstrated that red palm oil is the least atherogenic oil compared to refined, bleached, deodorized palm oil and randomized palm oil. The anti-atherogenic attributes of red palm oil is due to the presence of abundant amounts of antioxidants, particularly the carotenoids and tocotrienols -- Kritchevsky D, Tepper SA, Czarnecki SK, Sundram K, "Red palm oil in experimental atherosclerosis." Asia Pac J Clin Nutr, 2002;11 Suppl 7:S433-7

Long term heating of red palm oil does not have adverse effect on serum triglyceride, HDL and TC/HDL ratios -- Kamsiah J., Aziz, Siew, Zahir, “Changes in serum lipid profile and malondialdehyde following consumption of fresh or heated red palm oil”, Medical Journal of Islamic Academy of Sciences 14:2, 79−86, 2001

Dr. Wilson at University of Massachusetts Lowell showed red palm oil is better at lowering cholesterol than palm olein -- Wilson TA, Nicolosi RJ, Kotyla T, Sundram K, Kritchevsky D, “Different palm oil preparations reduce plasma cholesterol concentrations and aortic cholesterol accumulation compared to coconut oil in hypercholesterolemic hamsters.” J Nutr Biochem, 2005 Oct;16(10):633-40

It is safe to orally ingest vitamin E because it is not mutagenic, carcinogenic, or teratogenic. In human studies with double-blind protocols and in large population studies, oral vitamin E supplementation resulted in few side effects even at doses as high as 3200 mg/d (3200 IU/d) -- A. Bendich and L.J. Machlin, Safety of oral intake of vitamin E, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol 48, 612-619.

Red palm oil decreased significantly tissue plasminogen activator antigen, an important independent risk factor for coronary heart disease, compared to palm oil and sunflower oil -- Scholtz SC, Pieters M, Oosthuizen W, Jerling JC, Bosman MJ, Vorster HH, (2004), “The effect of red palm olein and refined palm olein on lipids and haemostatic factors in hyperfibrinogenaemic subjects.” Thrombosis research 113(1):13-25

Why don't Carotino and its marketing agents and distributors push their Red Palm Oil directly to
All the famous restaurants in Malaysia and highlighting all its nutritiuos and healthy goodness?
Get some famous personalies like Tan Sri Prof Augustine Ong, Tan Sri Datuk Dr Yusof Basiron and the likes to endorse its goodness..
The good oil has been in the market for close to 10 years (I believe) and yet it is only very slowly now catching up with the market......
Surely more aggressive marketing efforts are required to spread the GOODNESS of this wonder oil......
May be you should appoint an aggressive and GOOD main distributor , one such company is:
GBA Corporation Sdn Bhd, the boss is Mr Benny Tan. Talk to him!

  2. Wow! Is red palm oil really more nutritious than olive oil? I didn't know that.
I think I would be more convinced to drizzle red palm oil into my Ceaser Salad if it is endorsed by nutritionists and cardiologist.
Better still, leadership by example ... if red palm oil is the pride of our nation, how come we don't see the Cabinet ministers giving the thumbs up to red palm oil?

Hello palm oil insider and cleverboy,

Thank you for your feedback and below is my comments.

In Asia (and most parts of the world), consumers are used to cooking oil being 'yellow' in colour. Carotino, unlike ordinary cooking oil, contains high amount of natural Carotenes, hence its natural reddish hue. Not many consumers can accept this vibrant colour, yet. Point taken on your suggestion to promote red palm oil to all famous restaurants in Malaysia, highlighting its nutritious value and contribution to heart health.

We will continue to educate the general public on the natural goodness that mother nature has provided us Malaysians (if not, the world), on switching to a more healthier alternative, in Carotino.

In seeking product endorsement by famous personalities, I'm not sure if the two Tan Sris you had mentioned will be able to carry that much 'weight' in the current overall marketing process (all due respects to them, as both scientists have vast experience in this field). The general consumers may know about them. Having said that, you are right in suggesting famous personalities to help endorse our product. I agree it can go a long way...

And for the last part of your comment, point noted. GBA has got a very good track record.

I am very sure the 2 TanSri's will carry some
weight in your promotional efforts, let say at least 5 out of 10, if you want 10 out of 10 effect, get Dato' Michelle Yeo. Set a promotional
budget of RM2 miilion in the first year, 3 million in the following year, see the fantastic results. Note that GBA does not advertise too much on their lines of products, yet they are
household names, there must be a secret!
My conclusion must be their good network of distribution!!

Jonathan, The colour of the cooking oil is only a matter of perception and accustomisation.
Before 1970 when palm olein was made possible as cooking oil,Malaysians were used to light colour (like water)cooking oil since only coconut oil was used then. It took Lam Soon only a few years to replace the market acceptance of light yellow colour of palm olein instead of the traditional
water colour coconut oil, since palm olein is actually more healthy and promoted being so.

The same applied to Indonesia. When I commissioned a refining plant for an Indonesian customer in 1981 running on crude palm olein, the customer demanded that the colour had to be like water since the Indonesians were all used to coconut oil and by switching to palm olein, they would still insist on water like colour.
Today what happened... all Indonesians like Malaysians accept that cooking oil is light yellow in colour, need not be water like any more.....as long as it is more healthy and nutritious, and slightly higher price is often
not a factor since the monthly or yearly household expenditure on cooking oil is not that significant!

It takes courage, vision and wisdom to change the public acceptance of a product. I am sure that the GOLDEN Palm Oil (Don't call it RED)of
Malaysia with all its goodness and healthy attributes will be accepted by the consuming publics if more visionary efforts are put into its promotion. And the rewards can be very phenomenal.... look at the wealth created by T L Whang and Dato' Lim Kok Chong!

  6. For a few years my wife resisted using red palm oil as to her the color looks weird. I had to show her the color of tocovid vitamins e capsule to shows the red color is the indicator of high vitamin e. My reason why buy vitamin e when it is more economical obtained from red palm cooking oil vitamin. She have being using it for few weeks. Her comment now is oilyness had returned to flooring, tilings and exhaust fan. One reason that she only used soya or sunflower or canola oil for a short while is because of the above. Perhaps carotino should should not blend with canola oil.

  7. There is no doubt about the goodness of this cooking oil as glorfied by Dr. Bruce Fife in his book entitled "The Palm Oil Miracle". This book is pack with facts that everyone should know what fats and oils are really all about.
However, in that book he pointed out, on page 115, "Canola oil is known to block cholesterol uptake into cell membranes. This characteristic alters strength and elastic properties of blood cells, significantly shorteninng the lifespan of animals fed canola oil". He further mentioned that "the loss of blood cell elasticity can create an environment ideal for disease" (page 113)...."One of the first symptoms associated with the loss of blood cell deformability is elevated blood pressure" (last paragraph page 113).
Because of this and other articles that I read about how bad canola oil is it would be good if the manufacturer could give serious consideration in removing canola oil from an otherwise ideal cooking oil that protects our health, i.e. pure palm oil.
I am hesitant to buy this oil at the moment because of the canola oil blend.
BTW I am Malaysian and proud of our local products and will support it, if it supports our health!

  8. Why does Carotino mix Canola Oil with Red Palm Oil. Mixing GMO Canola with Natural Palm oil is a deal breaker.

  9. Yes! I've been a long advocate and user of Carotino red palm oil, until I realised that the company has surreptitiously used the highly harmful canola oil as a filler. ( most consumers will not realise this unless they happen to chance on the tiny fine print at the back of the bottle as I had) It is one thing to offer the public a natural healthy product as red palm oil, but NEGATE it with an inferior and harmful product. If I had wanted to purchase canola oil I would have done so,and not through label misrepresentation. I am highly disappointed, and even more so that mpoc has declined to respond to this consumer enquiry.
